What are some charities that I can work with my club to contribute to?

Can you answer maggie s’s question about Fundraising?:
I would like to keep in localized to North Carolina, but any good charity would be suitable. We are a club in high school that wants to volunteer and donate to charities, but want to support the smaller ones!

Fundraising Feedback:
This site provides web pages for parents of sick children to use as journals to be read by family and friends. In return, family and friends can leave messages. The fee for each page set-up is $50. A friend’s family has used this site for nearly 2 years as their child fights cancer at St. Jude Hospital in Memphis, TN. A very worthy site.
Fundraising Feedback: Maggie. I’m so glad you’re in the spirit of doing good for others. I was just about to graduate from college with a degree in biochemistry, when i got hurt at work, and consequently couldn’t work, couldn’t pay my bills, couldn’t go to school, got illegally evicted from my apt. and then became homeless. I had a “half-way”
normal upbringing, and i was about to be making $50,000/yr. minimum when all my dreams were shattered by a stupid accident. When i was homeless, I was given food 3 times a day, given clothes and toiletries, given shelter (we had 17 snow storms that winter), transportation to doctors appointments and love and support by United Way agencies where I lived. I never was a person to believe in charities; I always thought I needed every dime I earned for myself. Well, all that has changed. United Way agencies, like the American Red Cross and Salvation Army were instrumental in getting me back on my feet. This all happened to me when i was 24 years old. I’m 31 now and have a great job that i love, a house to live in, money enough for food/utilities/cell phone/ and even the internet (yeah!!). I can’t say enough good things about the United Way. I’m a big supporter of, and believer in, them. What’s also good for you to know is that in your county, United Way is likely supporting a vast number of different charitable agencies–some you’re probably very familiar with. Your money will either be spread out between the agencies, or you and your “club-mates” can designate a charity between all of you, or each individually choose one. There are so many ways that your support and $ will help. I strongly encourage you to check into the United Way and give them a call. Also, if any of you have part-time jobs, an easy way for you to gather more $ is to figure out how long a person will have to work, considering their rate of pay. i’ll give you an example. If I were to donate $10 a week from my paycheck, and i earned $10/hr, i would have to work 1 hr. a week to help others or broken down, 12 minutes/day. 12 minutes a day is what i can spend, easily gabbing or going to the restroom a few times, or whatever. good luck in your campaign and feel free to let me know how it goes. Thanks again for your decision to help your community, in whatever way you decide. All the good, and important people in this world, give back to their communities. Now you’re one of them!
Fundraising Feedback: Modest Needs is a registered charity which helps low income people who need money urgently to overcome an unexpected financial emergency like payment of utility bills, medical bills or repairs. Persons residing in USA and Canada can apply for assistance.
Fundraising Feedback: Special needs children have such limited opprtunity, limited further by the lack of facilities for fun or alternative therapies like horseback riding. The other limit is money. Family is already paying for many heallth related items not covered by insurance, and some pay parents pay for ALL therapies.
One week at Camp Summit is one thousand dollars
One or three months ( I forget which)of once a week half hr sessions at Equest Riding Center is 400 dollars
So here are just 2 in Texas for yor club to look at.
Spirit Horse Therapeautic Riding Center in Corinth TX
spirithorsetherapy.com
Camp Summit in Argle TX
campsummit.org.
After visiting the website, you may want to contribute, or search the northern states for a similar program.
RE camp: Keep in mind one reason the needs are so great is that each camp facility must be small enough to service the individual. They must be able to get to all areas of camp in a reasonable timeframe. For wheelchair it is slowly. Also the medical hut cannot be far from anywhere. Also the ratio of kids to volunteers, etc. Multiple locations mean multiple funding, so it does not happen.
RE horseback riding therapy: Spirit Horse is a no pay facility. Horses have to be furloughed 3 months in summer, 2 months in winter. (Approx) So even tho there are some families who do donate, that income disappears during that time.
Thank you for listening
